DCS Official Statistics

Market Price vs Food Inflation

Understanding the difference between DCS official Food Inflation Index and nominal market rupee prices

NCPI Food Inflation vs. Non-Food Inflation YoY (%)DCS NCPI (2021=100)
Individual Market Price vs Official CPI Food Index

The Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) measures Food Inflation by weighting hundreds of items inside the National Consumer Price Index (NCPI) and Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI). A drop in the inflation rate (e.g. from 95% down to 2%) does NOT mean food has returned to pre-2022 prices; it means prices are now rising at a much slower rate on top of the elevated post-crisis price plateau.

Wholesale vs Retail Pricing & The Marketing Margin

Dedicated Economic Centres (such as Dambulla and Pettah) report wholesale transactions where produce is traded by bags and sacks. Retail prices in neighbourhood grocery stores, supermarkets, and municipal markets include transport costs, wastage (typically 15-25% in perishables like tomatoes), rent, and retailer margins.

Data Standards & Lineage

Data Lineage & Methodology

Audit trails, verification rules, unit handling, and methodology guidelines

1. Official Primary Sources Only

Prices are sourced strictly from HARTI commodity bulletins, Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) weekly retail observations, and CBSL monthly reports. No unverified third-party scrapers are utilized.

2. Retail vs. Wholesale Separation

Dedicated Economic Centre wholesale transactions and suburban retail prices are stored in distinct data fields with clear marketing spread tags. Wholesale and retail series are never blended.

3. Raw Units & Missing Data

Raw units (kg, nut, 400g pack, litre) are strictly preserved without arbitrary conversion. When source observations are missing, fields remain explicitly labeled as 'Data unavailable'.
